The Galician Wind Association was founded in 1997 as an initiative undertaken by ten companies who represented 90% of the wind promoters in Galicia.
The purpose of this business union is to strengthen the presence of the Galician wind sector at a national and international level, whilst also establishing an industry benchmark for seriousness and responsibility, adapted to the environmental and economic needs of Galicia.
The GWA has become a reference point among public and promoters for its social-corporate responsibility, based on environmental protection and a sustainable economic and industrial development. Furthermore, it is committed to job creation and the diversification of the energy supply through new, stable, infrastructures.
The GWA’s first President was Pablo Fernández Castro, who was later succeeded by Luis Caamaño Martínez and Manuel Pazo Paniagua. Since 2007, the post has been occupied by Manuel Gago Rodríguez., who continues after the re-election in 2011. Jorge Fernández-Gayoso Mediero is the vicepresident, José María Cabezas Prado works as the treasurer, and José Toja Parajó, José Luis Guerra Vázquez, Alberto Sánchez Fernández, Iván Nogueira Pérez, Juan Barreiro Grandío and Manuel Pazo Paniagua are members.
In this same year, the total power installed by the member group was 2.414,92 megawatts (MW), distributed among the four Galician provinces. The Galician Government (Xunta de Galicia) has as objective an increase in installed power of up to 6.500 MW before 2010.
