Sectoral data
Wind is a variant of solar energy. The sun heats air on the surface of the land more than that above the sea. This air expands and rises, reducing the pressure above the land, making the wind blow from the sea towards the coast.

Operation

The wind promoter can either directly manage its installations, or, if it is related to the business group delegate the task to another company. Some members of the GWA have created their own affiliated companies expert in management and maintenance. Such is the case with Aldebarán, Energea and Siesma Galicia.

It is estimated that the exploitation and management of a farm of around 23.2 megabytes, will employ 7,250 workers.

Given that conditions in Galicia are especially suitable for exploiting wind energy, farms will exceed 2,800 hours. This explains why the community, with 25% of installed energy in Spain, contributes 30% of generated energy to the network.

Vestas

The lifespan of a farm is estimated at twenty years. Granted that such a period could be extended through a sound maintenance programme, this is not just a reasonable step to prevent material degradation, or a fall in returns, due to wear and tear; it can also precede renovation following repayment. It is desirable to incorporate the technological advances that this field is making, at a pace that reminds us of the information technology innovations.

In the course of a two-decade life span, the annual expenditure for exploiting a medium-sized farm is around 24,000 Euro; which is to say, it takes 480,000 Euro to maintain the installation in working condition.

Management of the aerogenerators is carried out by computer programmes and tools, which allow for remote control. The greatest problem with wind farms is the difficulty in guarantying that it will feed the network. Numerous different companies and organisations are developing research programmes to enhance predictability. This is the sector’s great challenge.
